Diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Both types lead to high blood glucose (also called blood sugar) levels. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults. In this disease, the body produces very little or no insulin. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy.

Diabetes is diagnosed with blood tests. People with type 1 should get regular checkups every 3 to 6 months after diagnosis, then at least once a year.
